The Central Gas Systems of Early-Type Galaxies Traced by Dust Feature: Based on the HST WFPC2 Archival Images

We investigated the central gas systems of E/S0 galaxies by making use of the WFPC2 images of the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We searched the gas systems that were traced by the dust with a new method of making color excess images in F555W - F814W (V-I). Out of 25 sample galaxies, we detected gas system in 14 galaxies. The dust was newly detected in two galaxies that were thought to contain no dust based on single band, pre-refurbishment data. The full extents of the gas systems are 0.1 to 3.5 kpc, and the masses of the gas, log M(gas) [M(solar)], are 4.2 to 7.2. The AGN activity is well correlated with existence of the gas systems. None of galaxies without the gas systems show the AGN activity. On the other hand, some galaxies with the gas systems show the AGN activity; optical AGN activities are shown in 5 out of 11 galaxies of which AGNs are optically studied, and radio activities are shown in 6 out of 14 galaxies. This shows that the AGN activity is driven with the gas system.Comment: gzipped tarred file containing 7 files: Tomita.tex (main text, needs aaspp4.sty), Tomita.tab[1,2].tex (tables, need aj_pt4.sty), Tomita.fig [1a,1b,1c,2].ps (PS figures). [Before he landed at Kagoshima(1549)in order to evangelize the Japanese people, the Jesuit Francis Xavier(150〔シ1552)had a big ptlzzle to settle:the question of transmitting the idea of 1)θ%∫into the Japanese language. Relying on the advice of Anjir6, a Japanese fugitive staying in Malacca, Xavier in the end adopted Dα勿ichi as the且rst word translating Deus into Japanese. The aim of this article is to cast light on this well-known social and linguistic event:it is a question of bringing into relief what took place in sixteenth-century Japan when attempts were made to render Western ideas that an Oriental language did not hapPen to possess, like that of Dθ%∫in the case of the Japanese Ianguage. Although the social and historical context are not identical, the end of the article re艶rs to the Chinese Rites Controversy, which seems to have something in common with the Dainichゆroblem in Japan. In conclusion, can we not see in both cases a sort of total faith by Europeans in Godls word, against which backdrop Xavier had determined to name God Dainichi before he landed in JapanP

During the long closure of our country〔1636-1868), Catherine II of Russia tried unsuccessfully to open trade with Japan in 1792, fbllowed by several attempts under the same pretext, attempts that proved f士uitless because the Tokugawa Shogunate turned back two missions sent by the tsarina, first fronl Nernuro〔Hokkaido)in 1792 and again f士om Nagasaki〔Ky血sh血)in 1804. Humiliated by the intransigence of the Edo Shogunate, several Russians, illcluding a lieutenant from a Russian military ship, velltured to enter Japan throtlgh the Gulf of Aniwa at Ezo(=present-day Hokkaido)in 1806. They attacked the indigenous people and plundered their provisions of fbod. However, in the wake of the United States and France just prior to the reopening of the collntry, imperial Russia managed to conclude a Treaty of Friendship between the two collntries i11 1858. Nevertheless, the new Me勾i government colltinued to look askance at inlperial Russia’s.policy of advancing southward, In opposition to its strategy, which included taking Manchuria and parts of I〈orea, Japan was obliged to dec玉are war against our neighbour in 1904. SHIBA Ry6tar6〔1923-1996)〔1), one of contenlporary Japan’s nlost celebrated novelists, made this war the su切ect of a serial novel,“S盈尻no ae no leamo”〔Cloads Oyθr がz8 Slope)〔1968-1972〕

Proteomic and meta-transcriptomic study on lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer

AbstractTo examine the proteomic background of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in gastric cancer, we performed protein expression profiling of paired non-tumor, primary tumor, and LNM tissues. Using a label-free proteomic approach, we generated protein expression profiles of 3894 unique proteins and identified 109 differentially expressed proteins. Functional pathway analysis of the differentially expressed proteins showed that members of the beta-3 integrin (ITGB3) pathway were significantly enriched. Aberrations of ITGB3 were reported in various malignancies; however, ITGB3 in LNM tissues has not been examined to date. Different level of ITGB3 expression was confirmed in 20 gastric cancer cases by Western blotting. We analyzed the mRNA levels of the differentially expressed proteins by using a public mRNA expression database; 38.8% of the proteins examined, including those involved in oxidation and reduction, showed correlation between protein and mRNA levels. Proteins without such correlation included factors related to cell adhesion. Our study suggests a novel role for the integrin pathway in the development of LNM in gastric cancer and indicated possible benefits of observational transcriptomic analysis for proteomic studies

Adrenomedullin in sinusoidal endothelial cells play protective roles against cold injury of liver

Donor organ damage caused by cold preservation is a major problem affecting liver transplantation. Cold preservation most easily damages liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), and information about the molecules modulating LSECs function can provide the basis for new therapeutic strategies. Adrenomedullin (AM) is a peptide known to possess anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties. AM is abundant in vascular endothelial cells, but levels are comparatively low in liver, and little is known about its function there. In this study, we demonstrated both AM and its receptors are expressed in LSECs. AM treatment reduced LSECs loss and apoptosis under cold treatment. AM also downregulated cold-induced expression of TNF alpha, IL1 beta, IL6, ICAM1 and VCAM1. AM reduced apoptosis and expression of ICAM1 and VCAM1 in an in vivo liver model subjected to cold storage. Conversely, apoptosis was exacerbated in livers from AM and RAMP2 (AM receptor activity-modifying protein) knockout mice. These results suggest that AM expressed in LSECs exerts a protective effect against cold-organ damage through modulation of apoptosis and inflammation.ArticlePEPTIDES. 31(5):865-871 (2010)journal articl
